Blog commenting has been an integral part of link building from the dawn of SEO, yes blog commenting is that old. This backlinking strategy has been abused and done to death by many SEO’s and because many still don’t know how to utilize this powerful backlinking strategy properly, it has come to be feared for the damage it can do to a website’s ranking.
Will Blog Commenting Kill Your SEO?
Google guidelines for acquiring links is to write content that is so awesome that it would automatically attract editorial links. Having good content is a mandate but just having good content on a new website that no one knows of is rarely going to pull in traffic.
The content needs to be promoted so that online dwellers know the awesomeness of your content and online the by-product of content promotion is links. So will blog commenting kill your SEO? Not if done properly.
Here is what Mr. Cutts had to say about blog commenting
How Not to Mess Up Blog Commenting
If you look at the backlinking guidelines at https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en there are a few aspects that stand out. Google says that the below link characteristics deem a link as shady
- Bought links passing PageRank
- Links in large volume with keyword rich anchor text
- Links are not editorially vouched - link placement was not moderated for quality
- Automatically created links
- Links of spammy sites. i.e. links on webpages with thin, duplicate content, adult or gambling sites, etc.
So if a blog comment was made on a
- Website with good authority
- Comment was read and approved, by moderator, before publication
- Blog page did not have thousand of other spammy blog comment
- Comment did not use a keyword rich anchor text
- Comment was not spammy and provided value to the blog article
If the above conditions were met due you suppose Google would still consider a blog comment as spammy? You bet your bottom dollar the answer would be a resounding NO!
I hope I have been able to convince you that blog commenting is still a legit back linking strategy and in fact can help acquire good niche specific, authority links and help build the overall authority of your blog.

How to Find Niche Specific Blogs for Commenting
Google Search Using Advanced Operators (Manual Method):
If I were to find acne related blogs for commenting the simplest way would be to head over to Google and type ‘acne blogs’ as my search query. This would return a series of acne related blogs which you would then comb through, removing category pages, articles about list of top acne sites, etc. and then start commenting on the remaining article pages.
But who wants to do so much work if we were able to list only niche specific article pages for blog commenting then our lives would be soo much easier.
This is where Google advanced operators come into picture. Operators such as site:, intitle, inurl, intext, etc. are advanced search operators and will help pull in only the most desired results.
For more details check the article here.
So let’s say I want to pull a list of WordPress website’s for the keyword acne then my query would be “Powered by WordPress” intitle:acne.
This operator would show you webpage’s that have the text “Powered by WordPress” on them and have the keyword ‘acne’ in the title tag. See screenshot below
But bear in mind that WordPress platform uses two other comment platform Disqus and Facebook comments plugin - there is some ambiguity about whether Google indexes comments posted via the Disqus and FB comment system.
If you would like Google to return results that do not include blog’s using Disqus or Facebook comment system then use the query below.
“Powered by WordPress” intitle:acne -"Powered by Disqus" -"Facebook comments plugin"
I would suggest playing around with various search operators to find blog comment opportunity that best meet your requirements.
Free Tools:
These two tools below are a total blessing. They help you find commenting opportunities on a wide range of platform including .edu and .gov blogs. Searching for blog’s to comment on has never been easier.
Drop My Link: http://dropmylink.com/ allows targetting searches based on blog platforms, commnet and forum backlinks, resource pages, etc.
You can opt for only .edu and .gov TLD’s by selecting the required option from the Any TLD dropdown. Also I suggest selecting the time limit to ‘Past Year’ so that you may end up getting some traffic along with a link via your commenting efforts.
Put My Link: http://www.putmylink.com/ tool is similar to Drop My Link but does not require registration.
Google Alerts:
This method is one the best for identifying blog commenting opportunities as they present themselves. Setting up Google Alerts for your niche relevant keywords can empower you with the first mover advantage and provide an opportunity to be the first commenter on many a blog posts. Watch the video below on how to setup and monitor Google Alerts.
Anchor Texts To Use
Completely avoid using keyword rich anchor text during my blog commenting outings because
- it is very likely to be rejected by the blog webmaster.
- You want to save the use of keyword rich anchor texts for more powerful backlinks.
- Purely use blog comments as a means of building the blog authority.
So keeping the above in mind the type of anchor texts I use for blog commenting are
- Brand Name (SEO Trance, SEOTrance, IM @ SEO Trance, etc.
- Naked URL’s (www.seotrance.in. seotrance.in, etc.)
- Your name at times
Types Of Blog’s To Comment On
You need to ensure that backlinks pointing back to your website are not from bad neighborhood, to make sure that your link in on the correct website make sure all the boxes below are checked
- Website has a domain authority (DA) of more than 20 (Use MOZ Bar Chrome Extension)
- Blog comments that have been previously accepted by the blog are not spammy
- Article does not have thousands of comments on it
- Comments don’t link out to adult or drug related websites
